What is llms.txt, and does my site need one?
Quick answer
llms.txt is a markdown file that gives AI agents a concise guide to your website’s content, but it isn’t required for AI search visibility.
What is llms.txt?
llms.txt is a Markdown file that provides a short overview of your website and links to useful content. It’s a proposed convention, especially useful for documentation sites, where agents need to find specific information quickly.
What does the file include?
A typical llms.txt file contains:
- Website or company name
- Short summary explaining what the site offers
- Useful context about the content and how to interpret it
- Grouped links to key pages, such as services, guides, product documentation and FAQs, with optional descriptions
It provides a curated content guide; it doesn’t control crawling access or AI training permissions.

Is llms.txt worth adding?
Consider it an optional aid for agents that support it, especially if your site has extensive documentation. Don’t treat it as a guaranteed ranking or citation boost. Google explicitly says it doesn’t use these files for search visibility.
